The first year will be virtual in preparation for a physical center.
The Fish and Wildlife Service has launched the Center for Pollinator Conservation, starting as a virtual space before the start of a physical center in 2023. The steep decline in pollinating wildlife across North America has caused concern in scientific circles. In the past 30 years, the total population of the American bumble bee has declined by 90 percent, monarch butterflies by 80 percent, and Allen’s hummingbird by 88 percent.
“Given the importance of pollinators to food security, opening this center will improve how we work as an agency, dedicate shared resources and provide a space where we can engage and unite with others to conserve pollinators,” said Director Martha Williams. “The Center for Pollinator Conservation will advance our existing conservation efforts and welcome all those interested in enhancing pollinator populations.”
